Fredrik Elmqvist launches new game studio to revive ‘lazy’ industry

Fredrik Elmqvist, the founder of Yggdrasil Gaming, has launched a new independent slot studio, EXCO Game Studio, aiming to bring a player-first approach and creative innovation to the online gaming industry.

EXCO, short for Excommunicado, plans to differentiate itself by focusing on immersive gameplay and unique mechanics rather than conventional slot themes such as buffalo or Egyptian motifs.

The studio’s first release, Vegasline, is set to debut at the SBC Summit in Lisbon next week, with a further five games expected soon after as part of a roadmap featuring more than 30 titles.

The studio will also introduce GAMEX, a proprietary suite of features designed to create memorable gameplay moments.

Among the mechanics are Wrapper Stacks, Power Field, Boss Fights, Power Bar, and an innovative Doubling Dial, all intended to provide players with distinct, shareable experiences.

“Shake things up”

Elmqvist, who served as CEO and founder of Yggdrasil Gaming for nearly a decade, said the new venture reflects his view that the industry had grown “a bit tired and lazy” with repetitive releases.

“Our approach to development is that we won’t ship what we won’t play,” he said.

“We’re looking to stand out with our artistic flair and superb mechanics, and we’ve been working for some time to create an exciting roadmap of games that will genuinely shake things up,” he added.

Before founding EXCO, Elmqvist built Yggdrasil into a major supplier of online gaming content, with offices across Malta, Poland, Gibraltar, and Sweden.

He held leadership roles spanning CEO, director, and board member, overseeing corporate strategy, product development, and market expansion.

Beyond Yggdrasil, he also serves as chairman of ParlayBay and Epicur Invest.

EXCO will operate on a model emphasising quality over quantity, releasing games only when they meet the studio’s standards for innovation and player engagement.
