DraftKings to offer multi-state poker following Michigan approval

DraftKings’ poker offering is now accessible to a combined pool of users based across Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) announced that it has agreed to allow the multi-state offering and DraftKings’ site confirms the development.

In fact, residents have already been able to access DraftKings’ shared-pool poker product across all three participating states since 8 July.

The operator’s partnership in Michigan with the Bay Mills Indian Community has facilitated the approval. Henry Williams, the MGCB’s executive director, said: “This approval reflects the strength of our partnership with Bay Mills Indian Community and the thoroughness of our regulatory process.”

Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement

In 2022, Michigan joined Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia as the newest member of the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA).

This deal was initially agreed between Delaware and Nevada back in 2014. Signed by Governors Markell and Sandoval, it was a US first that allowed users to play on virtual tables across state borders.

It does still mean, however, that member states retain flexibility and discretion over who is able to offer their products in each jurisdiction, so no regulator is beholden to the other.

That’s why this latest announcement only covers three of the states signed up to MSIGA.

On Michigan’s decision to take part, Williams added: “As Michigan’s multi-state poker network continues to grow, we remain focused on ensuring every operator meets the same high bar for fairness, security, and player protection.”

DraftKings‘ product expansion

DraftKings has been partnered with the Bay Mills Resort and Casino since 2020 in order to bring its remote sportsbook offering to Michigan following the overturning of PASPA.

It received its Pennsylvania licence around the same time, while its presence in New Jersey extends further back to 2018, when the state and its governor Chris Christie were at the vanguard of the battle to repeal the federal law preventing online sports betting.

Online poker is by no means where DraftKings cut its teeth, but its Electric Poker product debuted on the operator’s online casino platform back in 2024.

The operator continues to diversify its product offering, having launched its proprietary prediction market exchange DKEX in June.

Earlier this year, it set out its ambition to launch a ‘super app’ combining its predictions, gaming and lottery products.
