DraftKings to enter newly launched Washington DC betting market

DraftKings has announced its intention to enter Washington DC’s competitive sports betting market following its launch last week.

The operator said it would introduce its sportsbook to the market pending licensure and regulatory approvals.

The news follows DraftKings signing a market access agreement with Major League Soccer team, DC United.

“It has been incredible to see legalised sports betting grow rapidly over the past six years, and with plans to launch our online sportsbook in DC, DraftKings looks forward to expanding its presence in more than half the country,” said Matt Kalish (pictured), president of DraftKings North America.

“We would like to thank the DC Council for creating a path to bring DraftKings’ top-rated sportsbook to the nation’s capital. Together with DC United, we look forward to delivering fans a best-in-class experience through our customer-friendly product.”

DraftKings latest to join competitive market

DraftKings is the latest operator to declare its intention to enter Washington DC’s competitive betting market, which launched last week following amendments made to the district’s budget.

Previously, FanDuel enjoyed a monopoly on offering district-wide sports betting in DC, through a subcontract with Greek lottery supplier Intralot.

Both Caesars and BetMGM also had a retail presence in the city under previous market rules, but mobile betting with those operators was restricted to a two-block radius around their retail sportsbooks.

Since DC opted to open its market up to additional operators, both BetMGM and Caesars have gone live district-wide with their offerings.

Commenting on DraftKings’ intention to launch in the district, DC United president of business operations Danita Johnson said: “With the DC Council’s recent decision to expand the world of sports betting in DC, we look forward to working with DraftKings to introduce their online sportsbook as another way for DC residents to bet in the city.

“Our goal is to always make every fan experience seamless, and this platform will help us to deliver on that promise.”
