Betsson has been granted a licence to offer online sports betting in France.
The company’s sportsbook will launch under the flagship Betsson brand and is expected to go live by the end of Q4 2023.
The launch coincides with Betsson’s strategy to grow through geographic diversification in Europe, having launched online gaming in Belgium this year via a strategic partnership with French casino operator Groupe Partouche.
“I’m pleased that Betsson has obtained a licence to offer sports betting in France, which is an important gaming market in Europe with great long-term potential for online gaming,” said Betsson AB CEO Pontus Lindwall.
“By combining our knowledge and experience as a global gaming operator with the local expertise of our partner, we can offer an unbeatable customer experience in sports betting in France,” he added.
Betsson’s French sportsbook will be powered by Sportradar, while the player account management system (PAM) will be provided by OMEGA Systems.
A deal with Goma Development has also been struck to add innovative features to the sportsbook platform with one eye on elevating the user experience.
Joint venture
The licence to operate in France was obtained via a joint venture with a local partner.
Nadir Ounissi, who is understood to be the founder and CEO of Casino Secret and a partner of Betsson in France, said the sportsbook product would be tailored to recreational players.
“We have been following the development in the French market for some time and felt we could contribute positively by introducing a different product dimension and player communication,” said Ounissi.
“We have worked closely with local legal partners and the ANJ regulator to meet all requirements and ensure our operations achieve their objectives while addressing the current societal concerns related to gaming.”
“We are collaborating with experienced partners who have given us remarkable support, energy, and creativity throughout this journey.
“I feel that we have assembled a team of seasoned professionals that are able to position Betsson to succeed in this locally regulated market,” he added.
Casino Secret is currently the official gaming partner of Ligue 1 side Monaco in Japan.
Betsson France MD Sabri Tekaya said the company was delighted to receive a licence after a “long and meticulous” process.
“France is one of the largest European markets, and the Betsson Group is ambitious about engaging with all French players through its flagship brand,” said Tekaya.
“We have worked closely with local legal partners and the ANJ regulator to meet all requirements and ensure our operations achieve their objectives while addressing the current societal concerns related to gaming.”
Online casino gambling is prohibited in France as the vertical has not been regulated.
Betsson reported an 8.8% rise in revenue from Western Europe to €27m in Q2 2023.
